Sunday XXIV: The cross, test of sincerity

September 15, 2024.

“And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he spoke that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. … Jesus rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of man.”  (Mark 8, 29-32)

This manner of speaking of God as love, which is good, is a fundamental aspect of the truth revealed about God, although we sometimes forget other aspects of this same truth, such as the fact that God is Judge or Lord.  In whatever case, what is not so fashionable is to recognize that this love of God was made manifest above all in Christ, in the embodiment of the Son of God, and very especially in the redemptive death of Christ on the Cross. The Cross, the greatest proof of God’s love of man, the decisive proof.

Well, in the same way that God has done with us we should do with Him. Our crosses must become the proof that we love Him. To do this there is nothing better than to accept what God asks of us, such is our duty   with unexpected things in life. If we are capable of not fleeing from the cross for our love of Christ, who for love of us did not flee from his Cross, then we will be demonstrating to God that we truly love him.

We must not forget that in the teachings of the Lord to his disciples there is also the concept of the Resurrection: the test is passed and what succeeds in the end is truth and justice.

Intention: Do not flee from the cross. Accept it, as Christ accepted it. Offer it to the Lord as atonement for ones own sins and for those of others. Never lose hope, never.
