“And he found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting; and he made a scourge of cords, and cast all out of the temple, both the sheep and the oxen; and he poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew their tables; and to them that sold the doves he said, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house a house of merchandise’. His disciples remembered that it was written, Zeal for thy house shall eat me up.” (Jn 2, 14-16)
This Sunday, the Church invites us to celebrate and reflect on the “dedication” -or consecration- of the Basilica of Lateran, which is the Cathedral of Rome, the cathedral of the Pope. It is not, therefore, a matter of a mere historical event of local interest, but rather of the occasion to remember that the Pope exercises the real universal primate of the whole catholic Church and that, even as the Bishop of Rome, he is also the shepherd of all the world’s Catholics. This task, of course, does not replace that which each bishop must carry out in his diocese, but compliments and secures such task, ensuring its unity and catholicity and avoiding local and diocesan churches from becoming independent Churches, with their own dogma, liturgy and moral.
Let us, therefore, renew our faith in the papal primacy, with all its consequences. That is to say, let us accept its teachings without discussion and let us defend them before those who ignore them and even reject them. But to accept and defend them we must first know them. A good way of showing our support to the Pope is, therefore, being regularly informed of that which he teaches. In this way our support, borne from the love found in the heart, will be more effective and more useful.
Intention: Pray for the Pope. Be informed on what the Pope teaches on different current matters and defend this both before those outside and those inside the Church.
