“Jesus answered and said unto her, ‘If thou knew the gift of God, and who it is that said to thee, Give me to drink; thou would have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.’” (John 4, 10)
This week’s Gospel tells us the episode of the meeting of Jesus with the Samaritan. The Lord takes advantage of the situation to teach a lesson to his disciples and through it, to all of us: look for the living water, says the maestro. Look for the water that quenches your thirst, the water of the interior happiness, so different from that other one that the world offers and that can be very satisfactory at some time but shortly after it leaves the palate spoiled.
To look for the type of water that God offers us we only need one thing: to realize that the truth is the best, that we want to be with Jesus because only with Him will we be happy, no matter that this has a price and that we must give up other things. The living water, the water that satiates the thirst for happiness, only Christ has. The rest are imitations or at most, partial. Knowing this, being convinced of this, it won’t matter to us to pay whatever price to get this precious treasure.
To get it, continuing with the intention of last week, we must remember those moments of our lives in which we have felt happy precisely because we were with God, because we had internal peace. We must also remember those other times in which, because we had wandered away from the Lord, things began to go wrong. It may be that this hasn’t happened because we have never wandered far from His side. In this case, we must see what has happened to those who have suffered it, to give thanks to God because he has been our protector, the fountain of our happiness.
Intention: Examine your conscience to see if you are doing wrong, if you drink from a well of dirty water. And after confess. Give thanks to God, because without Him, you wouldn’t be happy.
