“Then he said, “I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’Abraham said to him, “They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.” (Luke 16, 27-31)
The parable of the rich man and the poor Lazarus may be especially useful to those who say that if they do not see a miracle they will not convert. In the Gospel parable they are given the answer that they deserve: “If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, they won’t do it even if they resurrect someone dead”. In reality, life is continually giving us occasions to convert and to be grateful. The answer to the “word of life” for this week will consist precisely in examining these revelations of the love of God to take advantage of what has already been given us and, from there, fill our hearts with gratitude. We will do it establishing what would happen if we didn’t have the health that we have, although this isn’t full. Or what would we do if we weren’t in the economic situation that we are in, or if our friends stopped loving us, or if our family members died, or if our family wasn’t a happy home. It is possible that one or another of the aforementioned things is missing for us and that the pain and even the bitterness are ruining our lives. We must then remember that perhaps something that we are now missing, at one time we had, and that there are many other things for which we can be grateful to God and our fellowman. If we don’t give thanks for what we have been given, what right do we have to complain about what we don’t have? Won’t our complaints, lacking in gratitude, be what invites who has given us all to take away what remains, since we value it so little that we complain?
Intentions: Examine the reasons for thankfulness, beginning with love of God, and be conscious through our behavior with the gratitude owed the Lord and our fellowman.
