XXVIII Sunday: Gratitude saves us

October 12, 2025.

“So Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.”  (Luke 17, 11-19)

Jesus wants to cure the worst of our ills, which is sin. Sin reveals itself in many forms, although all of them are summed up in one: offense against God and fellowman. One sins because one doesn’t love and by not loving one sins.  But if we look for the roots of the sin, we would see that there is one that is always present: ungratefulness. An ungratefulness which is inevitably tied to arrogance, since we are more ungrateful the more important we believe ourselves and, as such, the more we are convinced that we deserve that we should be given all and when so that it is only fulfilling an obligation. The person who is conscious of their reality, of their qualities and defects, and therefore, is conscious of how much they owe God, although they sin, return as soon as possible to renew their broken relationship with the Lord. On the other hand, he who doesn’t feel gratefulness towards God, he who is not conscious of the much that they have received, when he distances himself from the Lord he doesn’t even feel remorse and this is why he doesn’t yearn to return to the house of the Father. If we acquire gratefulness, we will be in better shape to not separate from Christ. And if we do, we will want to return to reconcile with Him as soon as possible, in the case that we have wandered from his side. We can affirm, from this perspective, that gratefulness saves us, because by being grateful we don’t sin or if we sin, right away we ask forgiveness of the Lord and we promise that we will be at his side, more filled with gratefulness if possible, because he has had mercy on us and has treated us in accordance with our sins.

Intention: Meditate on the reasons for gratitude towards God and do the things, especially those which are difficult, for gratitude towards Him.
