“We don’t want you to be uninformed about those who have died, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. And we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.” (1 Thessalonians 4, 13-14. 17b-18)
All Soul’s Day must, above all, serve to renew our faith in the resurrection. It is not a matter of believing in something that is comforting or that provides enormous relief because it is convenient for us to believe this, but rather because we are certain that it is the truth since Christ rose from the dead. The resurrection of Christ, as a historic and proven fact, is the foundation on which we base our faith in the resurrection, in eternal life. If this faith produces relief or consolation, if it fills us with hope, all the better for us. But we do not believe in the resurrection because of its comforting fruits, but because Christ truly died and then truly resurrected.
Secondly, on this day we must pray for our loved ones who have gone before us. It is a duty of gratitude towards them. Not to do so is to break the fourth commandment, since what they now need is neither our food nor our medicines, but rather our prayers.
Lastly, we must take advantage of this day to remember the example that those who have already passed have left us. That is the true “inheritance” that must help us live in such way that they, from Heaven, may feel proud of us.
Intention: Renew our faith in the resurrection and in the victory of love over death, pray for the dead and remember that which made them stand out so as to imitate them.
