4º Sunday of Advent: Take Maria home

December 21, 2025.

“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife”.  (Mathew 1, 18-24)

It wasn’t easy for Saint Joseph to accept the news that his wife was pregnant without having had relations with him. Without the intervention of God, Mary would have had to adopt the difficult state of unwed mother and Jesus would have disgrace of being a child o fan unknown father. But this fear of Saint Joseph also had a symbolic significance: the fear of letting into his own life the Son of God. A son of God who didn’t come with the trappings appropriate to his rank, since if it had been so no one who have doubted in accepting him with all the honors. On the contrary, he came camouflaged with weakness of a poor child, so poor that he had only the arms and heart of a very young Nazareth woman to defend him.

The same can also happen to us: for fear of complicating our lives, for fear of what God might ask us, we turn a deaf ear to the voice of the Lord’s angel, who invites us to take into our home the Virgin with the Child in her womb, with the Child in her arms. We don’t want a mess and, really we don’t have the problems of God. But since problems cannot be avoided, we have those of the enemy, of sin, of our own egotism. Taking Mary home, as Saint Joseph did, is synonymous with accepting what God asks of us, of accepting the law of love as the supreme in our life. Rejecting Mary does not simplify our life, but complicate it in another way, in a way more damaging for ourselves and for others. It depends on us with whom we complicate our lives: with God and Mary or with their enemies.

Intention: Participate in the schools of gratefulness and in the classes of formation. Help those who need it, conscience that in this way we let God into our lives.
