“Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!” And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with grave clothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.” (John 11, 43-44)
This Sunday, already so close to Holy Week, the Gospel invites us to meditate on the resurrection of Lazarus. This passage of the Gospel show us, as few do, the great humanity of Jesus, his pain on the death of a friend and also the fact that he went to help him, putting himself in danger, since he knew they were looking for him to kill him and that to go to Lazarus’ house would bring him too close to his enemies.
This proof should fill us with happiness, to know that we are of interest to someone who truly loves us. As well, we should realize that the miracle of the resurrection of Lazarus only happens because there is faith and that it self will be what happens to us: we will only be saved; we will only be converted, if we have faith in Jesus, if we are at his side, if we believe in his strength. Thirdly, this gospel that a miracle can be produces with a “borrowed faith”, good works cannot be transferred but faith can. Lazarus was dead and Christ did not ask faith of him, but of his sister. We can also ask miracles for others of the Lord, although they do not have faith in these miracles. Also, this faith must be translated into gratefulness, as without a doubt Marta, Maria and Lazarus himself had. Lazarus, on the other is not true faith.
Lastly, Christ invites us to leave our grave, of sin, through a resurrection that is within our reach every day: confession. And to give witness that it was Christ who freed us, who saved us.
Intention: Leave your tomb, that of sin. If you still haven’t confessed in Lent, do so this week. And be witness to the triumph of God through good works.
