“When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, «Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted place here.» But He said to them, «You give them something to eat.» (Luke 9, 12-13a)
There are theologians who believe that the miracle of the multiplication of the bread and the fish never happened, that it was only a result of the conversion of the disciples which, when they put together what they had it allowed that there was enough for all. This theory simply is not true. That miracle really did happen, more so the lessons which are in this reading of the Gospel are, effectively, an appeal to solidarity. Our ears should ring constantly with the phrase of Christ: “You feed them yourselves”. It is a mandate from the Lord to steer us with the goal of stimulating our generosity and that we share what we have with those who don’t and are in need. But in this passage, the Lord also prays in order that a miracle takes place.
In this same way he invites us to pray so that the multiplication of necessary goods happens in the case that what has been collected through solidarity is not enough, and to convert the hearts of those who have excess towards the result that they decide to share with those in need. And it is normal that he who prays will feel moved to share and he who shares for love of God, feels called to pray to give thanks to God for being capable of sharing what he had with those in need. This is why on the holiday of Corpus Christi; we must keep in mind two things: the call to solidarity towards our fellow man with works of charity and the call to solidarity with Christ, the permanent solidarity in the sacrarium, which is a poor one in need of our love.
Intentions: Charity with Christ, presence in the Eucharist, visiting it and taking communion. Charity with Christ, present in thy neighbor: through solidarity.
