“Then He said to them, «Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.» They immediately left their nets and followed Him.” (Mathew 4, 19)
In this tale of the calling of the first apostles we are invited to meditate on our own calling, on the exact form in which we should follow the Lord. Some are called to marriage. Others to sacred religious life. Others to the priesthood. All to be Disciples of Christ and to try to be saints. However, vocational planning proves useless -even when theoretical- if one is not prepared to assume the consequences that result from this plan. It serves little to ask the Lord, as Saint Francis did: “What do you want me to do? if alter one is not in a position to implement what the Lord asks. In fact, frequently, so as not to feel burdened by what the Lord asks of oneself, we end up convincing ourselves that that is not what the Lord is asking of us.
Be faithful in the small, is to prepare, to train, to listen to the voice of God, ask what he asks. And do not only see this in the vocational field. It is also important in other circles; such as, those concerning pain, illness and suffering. Frequently your problems seem huge, until greater problems occur which make them relative. If you haven’t learned to bear the little tests, you will succumb under the large ones.
Intention: Practice with difficulties, thinking that they are nothing compared to others. Ask the Lord what he wants of us and do what He wants.
