First Sunday of Lent: The worst temptation

February 22, 2026.

“Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, «If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”  (Mathew 4, 3)

The Lord wanted to suffer the most common trial for any man: that of temptation. This way he showed us his complete solidarity with us. One of these temptations is that of inactivity, of laziness, to turn to miracles instead of trying ourselves to resolve our problems. Miracles exist and one must ask for them, but not at the price that they cultivate our indifference.

As the finishing touch, there are many who have the audacity to hold God responsible for all the bad things that happen to them in this world while they themselves do nothing to solve them. Mother Teresa said “What you can do is very little, scarcely a drop of water in a desert, but of this little you are responsible.” Therefore, it is unjust and offensive to criticize God or others for what is going wrong while one is not doing everything possible to solve the problems. This temptation is overcome by accepting the commitment, the effort of helping others. At the same time we must pray, knowing that our forces are not enough to deal with the problems. The miracles of God must find us at work.

It usually happens, also, that those who do well including in a heroic way do not have a crisis of faith. Mother Teresa is an example, and like her, many missionaries, priests, monks, and nuns. Simply, they limit themselves to accept the mystery of God and don’t lose time on crisis which only serves to take away their strengths in their work helping the poor.

Intention: When you feel like criticizing someone because they don’t do what they should, think about what you do. Do something everyday to help someone; because of this you are responsible.
