XVIII Sunday: Servant of the poor

August 3, 2025.

“And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully …. But God said to him, “Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?”  (Luke 12, 14-21)

We need to restore our faith in eternal life. This is a very important axiom, one of the keys to our religion. Only this gives us the true measure of things and helps us to put into perspective such problems as we have blown out of proportion. It is with this eternal dimension that we can affront the difficulties of the present, without losing peace and hope. Everything happens on this earth but on the other hand in the world of posterity, the eternity with God, nothing happens. From this perspective we must also confront charity towards the needy fellow man. Although our primary motive of our love of God and fellow man is our gratefulness towards the Lord, who has loved us so much, we mustn’t forget another, which the Lord reminds us of in the parable of this Sunday: the prize for good works. Christ warns us that there is a “life after death”, crossing the straits of the door of death, in which we will be judged for the love which we have had on this earth. If we were to have this measure before us, this judgement, we wouldn’t doubt in serving the poor, since we would consider it a magnificent investment for the future, an investment that would give us the highest return precisely when we most needed them. Therefore, first for gratefulness and second to be able to relieve from God the gift of eternal life, preserve ourselves form all greediness. It is clear that we have material needs and that we must save for a rainy day. But must we save so much, while others can’t even subsist?

Intention: To show God our gratefulness by good works, giving to those who need, and generously, of our time and money.
