II Sunday: Do what He tells you

January 19, 2025.

“On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”  (John 2, 1-11)

In the wedding in Cana many things became manifest. One of these was the support that Christ counted on God for, as the disciples could verify upon seeing the miracle of the transformation of the water to wine. Another was the blessing of human love and, with it, the constitution of the sacrement of marriage.

But this, and much more, could happen thanks to the Virgin Mary. It was she who induced Jesus to take pity on the newlyweds, from that it is easy to deduce that she knew her son was capable of performing miracles.  And, above all, it was she who left us one of the most beautiful phrases of the New Testament, which has become a way of life: “Do as He tells you.”

Mary always shows us, from that moment on, how she constantly directs us toward her Son, entreating us to obey him. She encourages us to do it even though we don’t understand, as must have happened to the servants who filled the stone waterpots with water without knowing that the miracle was about to happen. She asks us to obey, that we follow Christ, not only to make happy, Him, her Son, but also because it is best for us.

Intention: Do what God asks of me – fulfill my obligations, with the commandments as they are taught in the Church – although I don’t understand or even have doubts.
