XIX Sunday: Don’t be afraid

August 10, 2025.

“Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom.”  (Luke 12, 32)

There are few people who are not afraid. Perhaps only the saints. Those who are having a bad time fear that it will never be over. Those that are enjoying life are aware that their good fortune is very fragile and may change for the worse at any moment.  Likewise, there is another fear which assails us, that our Church may be defeated by the forces of evil. This is why it is very useful to remember the words of Christ in this Sunday’s Gospel: “Do not fear, little flock”. We should not be afraid of the present nor of the future. If God is with us and we are with him, although heaven and earth shake, we will be protected. Including when we don’t understand well what is happening.

However, the confidence that the Lord invites us to have must be based on prudence. God is our protector and he is the Lord of history, but this doesn’t mean that we can go around totally carefree, committing grave errors, as if whatever we did everything would turn out fine because we have a Father who rectifies everything we set askew. While God is All powerful and acts in history, we too must be responsible for our actions.  To not be afraid, as well as to have confidence in God, we must avoid those things which, if take place, would fill us with fear. This is Christian prudence. This doesn’t mean to do nothing, but to measure our strength, and above all, do no evil, so that alter we are not left with bill which we have left unpaid. And, if we have committed a wrong, the first thing to get back hope is to repent, followed by confession, and the second is to construct the means by which it cannot happen again. Only if we remove our selves from sin and live in love will we be in peace and without fear.

Intention: Trust in God amidst your trials and tribulations and create the means so that problems do not occur or can be resolved, always within legal boundaries.
