“I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.” (John 6, 51-52)
The words of Christ in which he defines himself as “bread”, as the food which gives life, are not only metaphors or symbols. Faith in the real presence of the Lord in the Eucharist allows us to understand what was almost impossible for the Jewish mentality of Christ’s time. We know, by faith and experience, that the Lord is truly present there and to nourish oneself with his flesh and his blood brings with it life.
However, this – the help we receive from the Lord – is only one aspect of the Eucharist. There is another: Christ gives himself as nourishment not only to strengthen ourselves, but so that, recovered from our fatigue, we carry the strength we have received from God to those who lack it.
On account of this, this week, the “word of life” invites us to try to be ourselves nourishment for the rest, strength and solace for the rest, the same as the Lord has been and continues to be for us. If Christ has been nourishment for us, let us be it for all those in need of help, of solace, of hope.
Intention: Nourish yourself with the Eucharist, if you can daily. Pray before the Sacrarium and look for help and solace in it. And later, help the rest as you have been helped.
