“So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.” (Luke 15, 20-24)
The parable of the prodigal son is a source of innumerable lessons. However, this week we can pay attention to the attitude of the younger son, the bad son who leaves the home of his father to live a life far from him. We are all portrayed, in one way or another, in this wayward son. But, if he is a bad example in terms of sin, he is a model to follow in terms of reconciliation with God, in the return home. According to the parable, the reasons for his return were totally egotistical, but the Father didn’t care; he ordered a large party to celebrate the return of his beloved son, who had been lost and was recovered. This week we must plan precisely this return and we must do it from where we are and for the best of reasons; to give God our Father a well deserved joy.
Surely the majority of us have never left our paternal home, it is even possible that we are not in mortal sin or even that we have never committed one; but even in this case it is necessary to return, in the sense of getting closer, of closing the ties of love and thankfulness with he who loves us so much. It is also necessary to compensate those abandoned by others, to console our common Father for the injuries caused by other children, many because of misfortune. Return to our father’s house means increase praying, increase the motives for gratefulness towards God. And from these motives make that our good works are full of generousity and compassion for our fellow man.
Intention: Confess, even if there are no grave sins. Increase praying to console the Father abandoned by so many children. Help our brothers to return, evangelize.
